Home Our Approach Communication

Communication Support at Kestrel House School

At Kestrel House School we recognize that every learner communicates in their own unique way.  Our approach to communication support is built around understanding and supporting each learner’s individual style, whether they use spoken language, alternative and augmentative communication (AAC), signs, symbols, or a combination of methods.

Our Approach
We work closely with Speech & Language Therapists to develop personalised communication profiles for each learner.  Our staff are trained in a range of communication approaches and strategies, and we embed communication support throughout the school day.  This means learners practice and develop their communication skills in meaningful real-world contexts.

We use a Total Communication approach, which means we support learners to communicate using any and all methods that work for them.  This might include spoken words, signing, symbols, gestures, technology, or a combination of these. We believe in giving learners multiple ways to express themselves.

Communication Friendly Environment
Our school environment is designed to support communication at every level.  Core boards are available in every classroom and shared space, giving all learners access to essential vocabulary for everyday communication.  These boards include high-frequency words that can be used across different activities and situations.

We use visual supports, including schedules, now and next boards, and social stories throughout the school.  Classrooms are structured to reduce sensory overload and provide calm areas where learners can regulate before communicating.  We also use symbols, pictures, photos and objects to support understanding and expression. We consider our environment and learning supports carefully in order to ensure they have access to the right resources.

Sign Supported English
Our staff use Sign Supported English (SSE) to support language development and understanding. SSE uses signs from British Sign Language alongside English, following English grammar and word order.  This gives learners a visual representation of language whilst they’re hearing it, which can support their understanding and their ability to express themselves.

Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)
We’re committed to giving every learner a voice. We provide access to a range of personalized communication tools, including choice boards, core boards, topic boards and communication books.  Our staff are trained to support learners in using these tools effectively throughout their school day, helping them to participate in lessons, social activities, and express their needs and ideas.  We work with families to share information about communication strategies and tools their child uses, supporting consistency in approach between home and school.

Building Communication Skills
We focus on functional communication that helps learners express their needs, make choices, build relationships and navigate the world.  This includes supporting learners to communicate about their sensory needs, emotions and preferences.  We celebrate all forms of communication and follow our learners’ lead when making choices about how they communicate.
