Primary Department at Kestrel House School

Building Firm Foundations Moving Towards the National Curriculum

Our Primary Department aims to provide a warm, friendly and secure environment where our children enjoy learning.

Our primary curriculum is child centred and ensures that each child has access to their full curriculum entitlement.

All pupils have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is discussed and shared with parents to ensure continuity between home and school. Progress is carefully monitored and feeds into our assessment system. This is important as it clearly shows each pupil's progress and ensures future planning is well matched to their needs.

Our curriculum is designed to teach skills in an interesting and motivating manner that are intrinsic to each child's development, with a focus on developing -

  • Communication skills
  • Social Skills
  • Flexibility of thinking
  • Independence and self awareness skills
  • Being a team player
  • Being part of the wider community
  • Being a healthy and happy learner

All children have access to the local community to ensure that learning is practised and generalised in a variety of settings. Pupils are able to participate in weekly swimming sessions and ,if suitable, can join termly horse riding lessons.

Each day starts with our 'breakfast club' and a daily exercise session. This enables the pupils to have a positive, energetic and healthy start to their day especially if they have had a long journey in a car or taxi. It physically and mentally improves their alertness in readiness for the exciting school day ahead.

We fully endorse the 'Every Child Matters' agenda

Our multidisciplinary Eagle House Approach

We aim to be more than just a primary school. In order to meet our children's global needs, not just their education, we have a multidisciplinary Team who base their methodology firmly in the Eagle House Approach. The Team includes:-

  • Speech and Language Therapy - developing communication by working and planning alongside teachers for a proportion of the weekly timetable. This ensures that communication targets are integral to all teaching and learning
  • Occupational Therapy - developing motor skills and addressing the wide range of sensory difficulties
  • Psychology - working in partnership with school staff and parents on behavioural, learning and development issues

This makes us a unique and expert resource for children with an autistic spectrum disorder

  • Each class has 6/7 children with a core staff of 1 teacher, 2 assistants and regular input from a speech and language therapist. Additional support may be needed for individual pupils and this will be addressed upon entry
  • Classes are grouped according to both age and ability
  • We provide for and have experience in working with children from the full range of the autistic spectrum including children with Asperger's syndrome

School opening times -

  • School opens each day at 8.35am
  • The school day starts at 9.00am
  • Lunch is from 12 noon until 12.45pm
  • School closes each day at 3pm

We aim to be more than just a school
