At Kestrel House School, the disciplines of Speech and Language Therapy and teaching are combined to form a communication-based curriculum that is sensitive to every pupil's needs. We use an individually determined combination of the following in autism and education:

  • Small steps approach
  • TEACCH
  • Visual strategies
  • Intensive Interaction
  • Clear structure to lessons/sessions
  • Social Skills training
  • Turn Taking
  • Circle Time
  • Individual/group/class teaching sessions
  • Behaviour management programmes
  • Social Stories
  • PECs
  • Music therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Occupational Therapy

At Kestrel House School, we base our teaching philosophy on the belief that learning is not just the acquisition of skills, but rather that true learning affects the way a child thinks and understands the world.

At Kestrel House School we provide a communication-based visually supported curriculum with structured learning opportunities that focus on teaching strategies for developing attention, communication, social interaction and play skills. Challenging behaviours are addressed through consistent management.

The emphasis is on positive, pupil orientated learning differentiated for the needs of each pupil eg primary children being taught incidentally through the us of play materials fun, pleasure and enjoyment. In this way, children will readily and meaningfully engage in the curriculum (based on 'Birth to Three Matters', Foundation Stage curriculum and KS1/2 of the National Curriculum).

Secondary school age pupils are taught based on theKS3/4 National Curriculum.

We aim to enable pupils at Kestrel House School to relax and enjoy coming to school and to love learning. We also work closely with parents to help provide consistency and to assist parents with skills that can be transferred from school to home. Our Parent Support group meets on a regular basis and provides training, support and an opportunity for parents to meet the staff and with each other.

Educational Aims

At Kestrel House School, we aim to give every pupil equality through opportunity via a broad and balanced curriculum designed to meet their specific needs:

  • To develop a positive and independent approach to learning for every child
  • To provide relevant and stimulating  sessions/lessons which enable every child to reach their full potential
  • To provide a safe, caring and friendly environment which allows for the development of the individual
  • To develop social and communication skills in all settings
  • To value others, their thoughts and their ideas

We aim to enable pupils at Kestrel House School to relax and enjoy coming to school
